Road Traffic Fatalities in Punjab
Punjab, Pakistan’s most populous province, faces a severe crisis regarding road traffic accidents, which claim thousands of lives annually and rank among the leading causes of unnatural deaths in the region.
The expanding road network, connecting major urban centers like Lahore, Faisalabad, and Multan with vast rural areas, sees a dangerous mix of heavy commercial transport, passenger buses, and millions of vulnerable two-wheelers.
Several critical factors contribute to this high mortality rate.
Speeding, reckless driving, and a widespread disregard for basic traffic laws—such as driving on the wrong side of the road—are chronic issues.
Furthermore, the commercial use of agricultural vehicles, particularly tractor-trolleys heavily loaded with sugarcane, bricks, or construction materials, presents a lethal hazard on dual carriageways and inter-city bypasses. These vehicles frequently lack essential safety features like rear reflectors or tail lights, making them highly dangerous to smaller vehicles at night or during foggy weather.
Motorcyclists remain the most vulnerable demographic on Punjab’s roads, routinely suffering fatal head injuries due to a lack of helmet compliance.
Efforts by the Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) and the National Highways and Motorway Police have significantly improved emergency response times and post-crash trauma care.
However, experts emphasize that curbing this deadly trend requires a fundamental shift in road safety enforcement.
This includes stricter licensing procedures, mandatory fitness checks for commercial and agricultural vehicles, improved road engineering, and robust public awareness campaigns targeting defensive driving.
