ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has praised Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Pakistan’s army chief, for the recently announced agreement between the United States and Iran, saying the general has succeeded once more on a global stage.
In a social media post accompanied by a picture of Field Marshal Munir, Naqvi wrote: “Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has done it again — this time not only for his country but for the world.”
The remarks came shortly after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif publicly announced a peace agreement between Washington and Tehran. The prime minister stated that the official signing ceremony will take place in Switzerland on June 19.
In a separate social media message, Prime Minister Sharif praised the diplomatic roles of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey in brokering the deal. He added that the parties have committed to “an immediate and permanent end to military operations on all fronts,” including in Lebanon.
Neither the White House nor Iranian officials have commented on Pakistan’s claimed involvement. However, Naqvi’s assertion suggests that Islamabad—and specifically its top military leadership—played a decisive behind‑the‑scenes role in ending hostilities between the U.S. and Iran.
The agreement, if finalized as described, would bring a halt to military campaigns that began in late February when the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran. It also includes provisions to end operations across multiple fronts, including Lebanon, where regional tensions had threatened to expand.
