Naqvi Meets Iranian Counterpart to Discuss Regional Security

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said on Saturday that he held a second meeting with his Iranian counterpart Eskandar Momeni to discuss the evolving security situation in the Middle East, as diplomatic efforts to revive stalled US-Iran talks remain deadlocked.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) interior and public security ministers’ meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

It comes as Pakistan continues diplomatic engagement amid rising regional tensions. Islamabad had earlier condemned reported Iranian drone and missile strikes on Kuwait and Bahrain, warning that renewed hostilities were undermining efforts to reduce tensions between Washington and Tehran.

“Met my dear brother, H.E. Eskandar Momeni, Interior Minister of Iran again,” Naqvi said in a post on X. “We reviewed the evolving regional security situation and discussed matters of mutual interest.”

Earlier on Saturday, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it had intercepted multiple Iranian ballistic missiles and drones launched toward the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf states.

Pakistani officials have remained in contact with both Tehran and Washington since tensions escalated in late February, exchanging messages and peace proposals between the two sides.

Islamabad also helped facilitate a fragile ceasefire on April 8. The arrangement has largely held, but diplomatic talks remain stalled over Iran’s uranium enrichment programme and disputes involving the Strait of Hormuz following US-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets.

Naqvi and Pakistan’s Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir visited Iran in May for high-level meetings aimed at advancing mediation efforts and encouraging a diplomatic breakthrough.

Pakistan’s engagement with Iran has intensified in recent months as regional tensions have continued to flare, with sporadic exchanges of strikes between Iranian and US-linked forces.
