TEHRAN: Iran has firmly denied any involvement in the recent attack on a US military Apache helicopter patrolling the strategic Strait of Hormuz, even as Washington signals a potential response.
In an interview with Qatari broadcaster Al Jazeera, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister stated that Tehran had “nothing to do” with the incident. He suggested that the US helicopter was not deliberately targeted, adding that such events could occur unintentionally given the highly tense environment in the crowded waterway.
“These situations can happen by accident amid the prevailing tensions,” the Iranian diplomat said, reiterating that his country had no offensive intent.
Meanwhile, a US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, claimed that an Iranian drone struck the American helicopter. However, the official acknowledged that it has not yet been proven whether the action was intentional, and investigations remain ongoing.
In a contradictory statement, Iranian military sources insisted that no airstrikes of any kind have been carried out in the Hormuz region for the past 24 hours, further casting doubt on the nature of the incident.
