BRUSSELS : Facing severe global backlash over egregious human rights violations, the Afghan Taliban regime has suffered a major diplomatic blow as the European Parliament overwhelmingly rejected its extremist policies and newly instituted criminal code by a sweeping majority of 480 votes.
According to the official declaration, European lawmakers categorized the Taliban’s judicial and penal system as a tool for the systematic exploitation, enslavement, and gender-based discrimination of women.
The passed resolution demands an immediate halt to these draconian measures and calls for the outright revocation of the regime’s criminal code.
Furthermore, the European Parliament strongly urged EU institutions and member states to withhold diplomatic recognition and refrain from normalizing ties with the Taliban regime.
The resolution also called for the imposition of stricter sanctions on Taliban leadership and emphasized the rigorous enforcement of International Criminal Court (ICC) warrants against those responsible for these violations.
