BEIJING: China’s Ministry of Commerce has confirmed that Chinese airlines will purchase 200 passenger aircraft from US aerospace giant Boeing in what marks the largest aircraft order placed by any country in recent years.
The development came shortly after US President Donald Trump visited China from May 13 to 15 and held detailed talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Under the agreement, China will initially acquire 200 aircraft. Officials said the order could expand to as many as 750 planes if Boeing meets performance and delivery expectations.
Alongside the aviation deal, the two global powers also agreed to ease years of tariff disputes. Under a future “Trade Council Framework,” both countries will reduce tariffs on $30 billion worth of each other’s goods.
Chinese officials said the move aims to prevent further escalation in tariff tensions and bring stability to bilateral trade relations. The two sides also agreed to establish permanent Trade and Investment Councils to resolve disputes and coordinate economic policies.
The agreement also includes measures to boost agricultural trade. China will increase imports of US soybeans, beef and poultry, while the United States will ease market access for Chinese seafood, fruits and dairy products.
The two countries also discussed cooperation on strategic minerals and rare earth exports. China expressed willingness to work with Washington to maintain stability in global supply chains.

Analysts said structural tensions over technological dominance still remain between the two countries. However, they noted that the latest trade agreement reflects a serious effort by both sides to prevent further deterioration in economic ties.
