ISLAMABAD: Electricity prices are expected to drop by Rs. 1.93 per unit under the upcoming quarterly tariff adjustment.
While a separate monthly fuel cost adjustment for April indicates a potential hike of Rs. 1.73 per unit, the combined effect of both adjustments in June will still result in a net relief of 20 paisa per unit for consumers.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) will make the final decision following formal public hearings.
The Power Division confirmed that the Rs. 1.93 reduction from the quarterly adjustment will completely offset the Rs. 1.73 monthly fuel price increase, effectively ensuring tariffs do not rise in June.
Timely policy interventions have shielded consumers from an estimated Rs. 38 billion burden, preventing an otherwise massive monthly fuel adjustment hike of Rs. 5 to Rs. 6 per unit.
Despite LNG supply disruptions and the forced use of expensive furnace oil, the Power Division successfully managed the load and contained costs by increasing local gas supplies and boosting production from imported coal plants.
Continued policies, rising electricity demand, and targeted packages have already enabled a Rs. 65 billion refund to consumers during the first quarter’s adjustment.
A spokesperson for the Power Division reiterated that reference tariffs will not increase next month.
Instead, citizens can realistically expect a net relief of about 20 paisa per unit despite highly challenging economic circumstances.
