BJP Continues Discriminatory Policies Against Muslims as Seminary Declared Illegal in IIOJK

SRINAGAR: The BJP-led government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has continued its Hindutva-driven policies against the Muslim minority, as a decades-old Islamic seminary in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir was declared an unlawful entity.

Darul Uloom Jamia Siraj-ul-Uloom in the Imam Sahib area of Shopian district was declared unlawful by the Jammu and Kashmir administration under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967, officials said on Monday.

The action was taken under what critics have called discriminatory policies, which have been accused of targeting Muslim institutions in IIOJK.

The order was issued by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg. It was based on inputs from a police dossier submitted by the Senior Superintendent of Police, Shopian, on March 24, 2026.

The institution was described in the order as being allegedly linked to the banned Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir and its affiliate Falah-e-Aam Trust.

Allegations of administrative, legal, and financial irregularities were also cited. Issues related to land acquisition, registration, and regulatory compliance were mentioned in the order.

Claims of non-involvement were rejected by the administration. It was stated that available material indicated awareness of alleged activities and failure to prevent misuse of the premises.

The BJP govt have authoritised the administration to take possession of the institution’s premises and assets following which the entities owned and run by the Muslim were targeting regularly.

The action has been described as part of a broader crackdown on Muslim institutions in the region, where several similar establishments have already been shut down.
