Major disagreement over Iran war, major country withdraws

BERLIN: The government of Friedrich Merz has made it clear that Germany will not participate in the ongoing conflict involving Iran and will refrain from any military involvement in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

The German chancellor emphasized that Berlin’s position remains consistent: tensions in the region should be reduced through diplomacy and strategic dialogue rather than through military escalation.

He underlined that Germany does not support actions that could further destabilize the already fragile security situation in the Middle East.

Merz stated that prior to the recent military operations against Iran, neither the United States nor Israel formally consulted Germany. He indicated that such major international developments require collective consultation among allies, particularly within European and transatlantic partnerships.

Berlin will not consider any form of military intervention unless a joint and unified decision is reached among European partners and members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The chancellor further warned against the risk of pushing the region toward a prolonged and potentially endless conflict. He described the current situation as highly sensitive and stressed that the international community must act responsibly to prevent further escalation.

Merz reasserted that the crisis related to Iran should be addressed through diplomacy, strategic engagement, and negotiations rather than the use of force.

He focused on that military confrontations could deepen instability across the Middle East and create broader geopolitical consequences.

Germany, he said, will continue to support diplomatic initiatives aimed at promoting peace and stability in the region.

Berlin believes that constructive dialogue and coordinated international efforts offer the most viable path toward de-escalation and long-term regional security.

The German government’s stance indicates a broader commitment to peaceful conflict resolution and multilateral cooperation.
