Pakistan President Says Afghan Government ‘Crossed Red Line’ With Drone Attacks

ISLAMABAD: Asif Ali Zardari, president of Pakistan, said the Afghan government had “crossed a red line” by targeting Pakistani civilians with drone attacks.

Zardari strongly condemned drone attempts attributed to the Afghan Taliban aimed at civilian areas in Pakistan. He said the government in Afghanistan was trying to evade its responsibilities through acts of intimidation.

The president said Afghan authorities had ignored commitments not to provide safe havens to militant groups. He warned that the current leadership in Afghanistan appeared to be challenging one of the largest military powers in the Islamic world.

Zardari said the Afghan government was seeking negotiations with friendly countries while simultaneously targeting Pakistani civilians. “By doing so, it has crossed a red line,” he said.

He reiterated that Pakistan remains committed to promoting peace and stability in the region.
