North Korea backs Iran’s new leader, slams US and Israel

PYONGYANG: North Korea has officially thrown its support behind Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, state media reported on Wednesday, while simultaneously condemning recent military actions by the United States and Israel against Tehran.

According to a statement from North Korea’s foreign ministry, carried by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Pyongyang “supports the Iranian people’s choice of new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.” The new leader was named on Monday to succeed his father, who was killed in the initial strikes against the country by the U.S. and Israel.

In a strong rebuke of Washington and its allies, the North Korean ministry “strongly denounces acts of aggression by the U.S. and Israel,” labeling their attacks on Iran as “illegal.” KCNA reported that the ministry views these actions as destructive forces that are “destroying peace and escalating instability worldwide.”

The statement from the isolated nation aligns it with Tehran amidst rising international tensions, signaling continued solidarity between the two states, which have long shared a contentious relationship with the United States.
