Pakistan Tells UN Terror Groups in Afghanistan Threaten Global Security

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has warned the United Nations that terrorist groups operating from Afghanistan have become a serious threat not only to Pakistan but to global peace and security.

The warning was issued by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, during a statement at the world body.

It was said that terrorist elements based in Afghanistan have repeatedly targeted civilians inside Pakistan. The presence of these groups in Afghanistan was described as a growing regional and international concern.

The Taliban administration was accused of providing safe havens to militant organizations. It was stated that several terrorist attacks in Pakistan had been carried out by militants crossing the border from Afghanistan.

During counter-terrorism operations in Pakistan, foreign weapons were also recovered. The discovery was described as evidence of dangerous militant activities in the region.

Pakistan also raised the issue of what it called an unprovoked attack on Feb. 26 by the Taliban administration. In response, retaliatory action was carried out by Pakistan. Enemy forces and terrorist elements were targeted during the response, the statement said.

Attention was also drawn to the continued presence of banned militant groups in Afghanistan, including Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Their bases inside Afghanistan were described as a major security concern.
