NEW YORK: Pakistan strongly rejected Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent entity, describing the move as illegal and a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty, international law, and regional stability.
The issue was raised during an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, where Pakistan confirmed its firm support for Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity.
In this regard, Pakistan’s Permanent Deputy Representative to the United Nations, Usman Jadoon, said Islamabad categorically rejects Israel’s recognition of Somaliland and considers the move contrary to established principles of international law.
Jadoon focused on the fact that Somaliland remains an integral part of Somalia and that any unilateral recognition undermines the internationally recognized sovereignty of the Somali state.
He said such actions risk destabilizing the region and could set a dangerous precedent by encouraging similar unilateral moves elsewhere in the world.
“Pakistan fully supports the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Somalia,” Jadoon told the Council. “Any action that seeks to alter internationally recognized borders without the consent of the concerned state is a clear violation of international law.”
The Pakistani diplomat also linked the issue to broader concerns in the region, reiterating Pakistan’s longstanding position on Palestine.
He said Pakistan strongly opposes any attempt to displace the Palestinian people and considers such efforts to be in violation of international humanitarian and international law.
Furthermore, Jadoon stressed that respect for international law and multilateral processes is essential for maintaining global peace and security. He called on the international community to act responsibly and avoid steps that could further complicate already fragile regional situations.
Meanwhile, Pakistan, he added, believes that disputes related to sovereignty and self-determination should be resolved through dialogue, in accordance with the UN Charter and relevant international resolutions.
He urged Israel to reconsider its decision, warning that unilateral actions could undermine diplomatic efforts and weaken the rules-based international order. The emergency meeting of the Security Council indicated growing international concern over developments that could affect stability in the Horn of Africa and beyond.
