UN Warns of Economic Collapse in Afghanistan Under Taliban Regime

UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations has warned that Afghanistan’s economy has collapsed under Taliban rule, leaving the country isolated both economically and diplomatically.

A UN report on counter-financing terrorism said Afghanistan’s gross domestic product (GDP) fell 6.5 percent in early 2025.

The report highlighted that unemployment has surged to 75 percent, while over 30 million people live in extreme poverty.

Afghanistan has remained outside the global banking system for years, severely limiting foreign investment, aid, and trade.

The UN stressed that the Taliban government cannot gain any financial or legal legitimacy without respecting human rights.
