Earthquake Jolts Karachi, Triggers Panic Across Several Areas

KARACHI: Karachi experienced a moderate earthquake late at night, causing tremors to be felt across several parts of the city and prompting fear among residents. The earthquake was recorded at 12:58 a.m., with its epicenter located approximately 87 kilometers northwest of Karachi near the Sonmiani area.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported that the earthquake measured 5.2 on the Richter scale and occurred at a shallow depth of 12 kilometers. Due to its relatively low depth, the tremors were strongly felt in many neighborhoods, particularly in the northern and eastern parts of the city.

In this regard, the residents in Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Phase VIII reported noticeable shaking, while tremors were also felt in PECHS, Qayyumabad, Kala Pul, Shah Faisal Colony, and Liaquatabad. In Liaquatabad, the intensity of the tremors was described as particularly strong, causing people to rush out of their homes and workplaces.

Furthermore, panic spread among residents, many of whom were seen reciting prayers as they evacuated buildings and gathered in open spaces. The emergency response teams, including police, fire brigade units, and Edhi ambulances, were dispatched to affected areas as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile. cracks appeared in a residential building near Lyari’s Naya Abad area, close to Liaquat Colony. Residents of the affected building, identified as Baba Arcade, safely evacuated the premises. Rescue teams and volunteers reached the site promptly to assess the situation and ensure public safety.

Chief Meteorologist Karachi, Ameer Haider Laghari, stated that the city’s fault lines have historically produced shallow earthquakes. He noted that while Karachi has experienced seismic activity in the past, including recent tremors in the Landhi area, the intensity of this earthquake was slightly higher compared to those events. He advised citizens to remain cautious, avoid weak or vulnerable structures, and temporarily stay in open areas when tremors are felt.
