Bela launches Benazir Social Protection Wallet, shifts to digital-only payments

BELA: The Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) marked a significant digital transformation in its operations in Balochistan with the official launch of the “Benazir Social Protection Wallet” in Bela on Wednesday. The initiative aims to streamline and modernize the disbursement of social safety net funds to eligible women across the district, shifting away from previous cash-based mechanisms.

Under the new system, all future financial assistance from BISP will be exclusively channeled through this digital wallet. Officials have confirmed that this mandatory shift is designed to enhance transparency, reduce logistical delays, and empower beneficiaries by giving them direct digital access to their funds. The move is expected to curb inefficiencies and provide a more secure and accountable method of transaction.

To facilitate the transition, BISP authorities have issued clear instructions to all registered women beneficiaries in the Bela region. They are required to visit the designated BISP office in person, bringing their original Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) and their personal mobile phone. At the office, each beneficiary must complete a biometric verification process. Following successful verification, they will be issued a new, registered SIM card linked specifically to the Benazir Social Protection Wallet platform.

The launch event underscored the government’s commitment to leveraging technology for social welfare. A BISP spokesperson stated that the digital wallet system would not only ensure that funds reach the intended recipients promptly but also integrate beneficiaries into the formal financial ecosystem. This integration is seen as a crucial step toward financial inclusion for women in remote and underserved areas.

While the program promises greater efficiency, local officials have also acknowledged the need for robust community outreach. They plan to conduct awareness campaigns to assist women, particularly those less familiar with digital technology, in navigating the new process. The successful rollout in Bela is anticipated to serve as a model for the phased national expansion of the Benazir Social Protection Wallet system.
