WASHINGTON: The Trump administration has conveyed to New Delhi the need for India to formally distance itself from Baloch militant groups, including the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA).
The US officials have expressed concerns regarding India’s alleged indirect involvement with such networks. They have stressed that continued association with groups like the BLA and its faction, the Majeed Brigade, could have diplomatic consequences.
In this sense, Washington added the BLA to its list of terrorist organizations in 2019, mentioning its responsibility for several high-profile attacks in Pakistan, including against security personnel and Chinese interests in the region.
The officials noted that if India fails to issue a clear public statement dissociating itself from these groups, the possibility of further sanctions on New Delhi could not be ruled out. However, they focused on that the US prefers dialogue and cooperation over punitive measures, urging India to reassert its commitment to counterterrorism.
The US has also been aware of Pakistan’s sacrifices in the fight against terrorism and has acknowledged the importance of regional stability.
