ISLAMABAD: Pakistani taekwondo athlete Ehsan Mehsud, hailing from the tribal region of Waziristan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has brought international recognition to the country by winning the gold medal at the Heroes International Taekwondo Championship held in Thailand.
In this regard, his remarkable achievement comes after overcoming significant financial hardships, including borrowing Rs250,000 to finance his participation in the prestigious tournament.
Ehsan defeated a Sri Lankan opponent in the championship final to secure the gold medal.
During the tournament, he also overcame competitors from India and Kazakhstan, demonstrating exceptional skill and determination throughout the event.
Ehsan described the achievement as the reward for years of dedication and hard work.
He said the success was not only a personal milestone but also a proud moment for Waziristan, a region that is often associated with conflict rather than positive achievements.
Ehsan said his passion for kicking and competitive sports during childhood motivated him to join a local karate club.
Since 2014, he has trained continuously at a local taekwondo club, participating in inter-club competitions across Pakistan and consistently winning medals, laying the foundation for his international career.
Meanwhile, Ehsan entered international competitions, first earning a bronze medal at a tournament in Dubai before claiming his first international gold medal in Thailand.
Despite his sporting achievements, Ehsan continues his education after completing intermediate studies.
He said financial challenges have remained the greatest obstacle throughout his career. To participate in the Thailand championship, he borrowed Rs250,000, while several brands also extended sponsorship support.
