WASHINGTON: The US Senate has passed a resolution calling for an end to military action against Iran and the removal of American troops from the country, in a significant rebuke to the Trump administration’s Iran policy.
According to foreign media reports, the resolution passed by a narrow margin of 50 votes to 47.
Media reports indicate that this vote signals a failure of President Trump’s administration in managing the increasingly unpopular war against Iran. The conflict has reportedly inflicted a financial shock of half a trillion dollars on the US and global economies.
Following the Senate’s passage, the US House of Representatives is expected to vote on the resolution this week.
Political observers express confidence that the resolution will also pass in the House, noting that a previous tied vote on the Iran issue occurred only because some members supporting the resolution were unable to attend due to medical reasons.
According to media reports, a significant number of US Congress members want congressional approval for any future war against Iran, reflecting growing bipartisan sentiment to limit executive authority over military action in
the region.
