WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has rejected media reports claiming that his administration was prepared to offer Iran sanctions relief and the return of frozen Iranian assets in exchange for progress on its nuclear programme.
Trump, in a post on Truth Social, said he had made no such offer to Iran and described an Axios report on the matter as false. He also criticised other media reports concerning the issue, arguing that they were inaccurate and politically motivated.
Trump directly disputed reports that Washington was considering economic concessions to Tehran. He called on Axios to withdraw what he described as a false report, while maintaining that he had not offered Iran sanctions relief or the restoration of frozen assets.
The president’s comments came after reports emerged suggesting that the United States could consider easing economic restrictions if Iran demonstrated concrete progress on its nuclear programme.
Earlier reports by US media outlets, including Axios and CNN, cited American officials who spoke on condition of anonymity. According to those reports, the United States had been communicating with Iran through intermediaries in an effort to establish constructive dialogue.
The reports suggested that sanctions relief could form part of discussions if Iran made measurable progress on nuclear-related issues. However, the reported proposal remained subject to negotiations and did not represent a confirmed agreement between Washington and Tehran.
