WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has announced that negotiations on a landmark agreement with Iran are nearing completion, with final aspects currently under discussion and an announcement expected soon.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said that the deal would also lead to the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments that has often been a flashpoint for tensions between Tehran and Western powers.
“The negotiations are nearing completion. The final aspects of the agreement with Iran are under discussion. The announcement is expected soon,” Trump said. He added that his talks with leaders of several Muslim countries on the Iran issue had been positive.
The US President specifically named Pakistan’s military chief as among those he consulted. “I spoke to Field Marshal Asim Munir,” Trump said, listing him alongside Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Emirati President Mohammed bin Zayed, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Trump described the discussions with regional leaders as constructive, though he did not provide a specific timeline for the final announcement. The development follows mounting reports of a draft peace agreement between the US and Iran, with Pakistan’s Field Marshal Munir reportedly playing a key mediating role.
As of now, no official confirmation has come from Tehran or the White House regarding the exact timing or details of the announcement.
