Punjab students lose big chunk of holidays

LAHORE: Important news has emerged for school and college students: the government has finalized a plan to reduce holidays in educational institutions.

According to details, a committee formed on the directives of the Rawalpindi Bench of the Lahore High Court has recommended the introduction of a uniform academic calendar across Punjab, mandating a minimum of 190 teaching days per year in all schools and colleges.

Instead of enjoying extended breaks, students will now be required to attend classes for 190 days annually.

As part of its recommendations, the committee has proposed shortening the summer vacations from the current 2 months and 15 days to just 6 weeks.

In its third meeting held over the past four months, the committee finalized these proposals.

Under the proposed plan, educational institutions in the province will be allocated a total of 175 holidays per year.

The number of actual teaching and curricular days will be set at 190.

Private school associations across Punjab have endorsed this recommendation.

Provincial School Education Department Special Secretary Muhammad Iqbal has instructed officials to prepare the uniform academic calendar within the next 3 days.

The committee believes that the continuously increasing number of holidays each year is negatively affecting students’ academic performance.

In particular, the syllabus in senior classes often remains incomplete.

Limiting holidays will help ensure the timely and full completion of the academic curriculum.
