KARACHI: Pakistan has achieved a major milestone in its energy sector with a successful and pioneering hydrocarbon discovery off the coast and marshlands in Jurassic Chiltan Formation .
According to an official announcement by Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), the company has struck a unique and significant gas reserve from its operated exploratory well, Dolphin X-1, located in the Sirani Block of Sindh’s Sujawal District.
This marks the very first hydrocarbon discovery from the Jurassic-age Chiltan Formation within the Lower Indus Basin.
PPL highlighted that this breakthrough conclusively establishes the presence of a working petroleum system.
It effectively opens up a brand-new exploration frontier across onshore marshy environments and their potential extensions into shallow offshore regions.
Two Decades of Gas Reserve Recoveries and Exploration Trends in Pakistan
Over the past two decades, Pakistan’s exploration and production (E&P) landscape—anchored by national giants like Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) and the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL)—has witnessed continuous efforts to bridge the widening gap between domestic energy supply and demand.
With proven natural gas reserves hovering around 19 trillion cubic feet (Tcf), the country has relied heavily on localized onshore finds, predominantly across Sindh, Punjab, and parts of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
During the 2000s and 2010s, mature basins in Lower and Central Sindh yielded numerous medium-to-small gas and condensate discoveries, keeping baseline production afloat while legacy mega-fields like Sui experienced natural depletion.
In the past ten years, operators have increasingly pushed into technically demanding terrains, such as the tight gas reservoirs of the Sindh Plain, exploratory blocks in the KP frontier (e.g., Nashpa, Bannu West), and deep-formation plays in Balochistan (such as Margand).
Despite these continuous discoveries—often numbering between a dozen to over twenty small-to-mid scale hydrocarbon finds annually—rapidly growing domestic consumption has meant that domestic production continues to face constraints.
