ISLAMABAD : Prime Minister PM Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff & Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir have departed for Switzerland to participate in pivotal technical-level talks between the United States and Iran, scheduled for Sunday, June 21, 2026, in the resort town of Bürgenstock.
The high-powered delegation, which also includes key federal ministers, will represent Pakistan in its continued role as the primary mediator in the diplomatic process, following the recent signing of the landmark Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) .
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the talks are a direct follow-up to the Islamabad MoU and are aimed at advancing the understandings reached between Washington and Tehran . The discussions will focus on technical and procedural matters, including water-related issues and mechanisms for implementing the agreed framework .
Foreign Office Spokesperson confirmed that representatives from the United States, Iran, and fellow mediator Qatar will join the Pakistani delegation at the negotiating table . “Pakistan will continue to facilitate the process in its role as mediator, with a view to advancing the understandings reached under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding,” the Foreign Office stated .
This diplomatic push comes after Pakistan’s success in securing a ceasefire and mediating the highest-level direct talks between the two nations since 1979 . The Islamabad MoU, signed earlier this month, immediately opened the Strait of Hormuz for international passage and initiated a 60-day negotiation period for a final settlement .
The Prime Minister is also expected to attend an international water treaty conference on the sidelines of the talks in Switzerland
