Pakistan Opens Direct Central Asia Trade Route as First Kyrgyz Truck Arrives via China

ISLAMABAD: A key regional connectivity milestone was marked as the first truck from Kyrgyzstan arrived in Pakistan via China under the Quadrilateral Traffic in Transit Agreement (QTTA), officials said.

The truck entered Sost Dry Port carrying commercial cargo. It was described as the first instance of a Central Asian country using its own vehicle to transport goods directly into Pakistan under the QTTA framework, which also includes Kazakhstan.

The operation was facilitated by the National Logistics Corporation in coordination with a Kyrgyz partner firm.

The development has been seen as a step toward deeper logistical integration across Central and South Asia. A reliable alternative trade route has been provided, reducing dependence on traditional transit corridors.

Plans have been outlined to extend the route southwards to Karachi Port. Direct access to global maritime markets is expected to be enabled for landlocked Central Asian economies through the emerging Bishkek–Karachi corridor.

Cargo movements from Pakistan to Kyrgyzstan have been conducted since 2024 using multimodal systems, including the TIR system. The current development has been built on that foundation.

The corridor has been viewed as a more stable and efficient alternative to routes passing through Afghanistan, where security and logistical challenges have persisted.

The initiative has been described by officials as a boost to regional trade and cooperation. Increased economic activity has been projected for Gilgit-Baltistan and beyond.

The route linking Bishkek and Karachi has been considered among the shortest and most efficient corridors in the region. Strengthened connectivity and expanded trade opportunities between Pakistan and Central Asia are expected as operations continue.
