Pakistan’s Test team management is considering changes to the playing XI for the second Test against England after the national side suffered a heavy defeat in the opening match of the series.
The second Test is scheduled to begin at Lord’s on August 26, with the Pakistan camp expected to assess the performances of the players as well as the conditions in London before finalising the team.
In this sense, captain Babar Azam is hopeful of returning for the Lord’s Test after recovering from an injury to his finger. His availability could provide Pakistan with additional stability in the batting department.
The opening combination is also expected to come under scrutiny. Awan Awais, who featured in the first Test, could reportedly be left out of the playing XI.
In this regard, the former captain Shan Masood or Abdullah Shafique could potentially open alongside Imam-ul-Haq, depending on the team management’s final assessment.
Pakistan are also considering their bowling combination, particularly if the Lord’s pitch offers conditions favourable to spin.
Off-spinner Sajid Khan is reportedly in contention for a return to the playing XI. If Pakistan decide to play two specialist spinners, the team may have to make room by reducing the number of middle-order batters.
Sajid’s inclusion could therefore lead to Saud Shakeel being left out, although the final decision is expected to depend on the pitch and weather conditions.
A change in the pace department is also possible, with Ubaid Shah reportedly in contention to replace Khurram Shahzad.
Pakistan Under Pressure After Heavy Defeat
The potential changes come after Pakistan were subjected to intense criticism following their defeat in the opening Test.
The team struggled in several departments, raising questions about the quality and balance of the current Test side. Pakistan’s batting failed to provide sustained resistance, while the bowling attack was unable to exert consistent pressure on England’s batters.
The fielding performance also attracted criticism, adding to concerns surrounding the team’s overall preparation and execution.
