Quetta gears up for local polls as over 3,000 file nominations

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in Balochistan have expressed strong confidence in securing the mayor's seat in Quetta, declaring that the party will "fully participate" in the upcoming local body elections scheduled for December.

QUETTA: The stage is set for a competitive first phase of local government LG elections in Quetta, with a significant total of 3,121 candidates submitting nomination papers for 641 wards across the city’s 172 union councils, according to officials from the Election Commission.

 

The enthusiastic response from prospective candidates signals a keenly contested democratic process to establish grassroots leadership in the provincial capital. The breakdown provided by officials reveals a widespread interest across Quetta’s major towns. The Town area leads with 940 candidates, followed closely by Zarghun Town with 918 aspirants. Chiltan Town recorded 701 submissions, while Sariab Town saw 562 candidates file their papers for the upcoming polls.

 

The electoral process now moves to its next critical stage: the scrutiny of all nomination papers. This vetting process, conducted by designated officials to ensure candidates meet the legal eligibility criteria, began today (Wednesday) and is scheduled to continue until November 24.

 

Following the scrutiny, the revised list of eligible candidates will be finalized, setting the stage for the election campaign. The much-anticipated polling day for Quetta’s local government elections is scheduled for December 28. The successful conduct of these polls is seen as a crucial step towards addressing civic issues and empowering local representatives in Balochistan’s largest city.

Meanwhile the Sui Gas load management schedule has been issued for Quetta on account of the repairing of the gas pipeline.

According to a TV report, the schedule of the gas supply closure in Quetta has been issued by the officials.

According to the load management schedule, the gas in Quetta and surrounding is to remain closed from 12:00 am to 5: 00 am.

The gas pipeline in Mach area was exploded with a blast by the Fitna al Hindustan militants a couple of days earlier.

The Balochistan High Court also slammed and SSGC officials on account of the closure of the gas supply to Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan.

The acting Chief Justice of the Balochistan High Court, during the hearing a petition on the gas-supply suspension in Quetta, said that why a proceeding should not be carried out against the officials of the SSGC.
