QUETTA : Unidentified armed men opened fire on the residence of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and Jhalawan Awami Panel chief Mir Shafiqur-ur-Rehman Mengal in Khuzdar district on Friday, with one attacker reportedly wounded in retaliatory action by his security guards, officials said.
According to security forces sources, a group of gunmen targeted Mengal’s house in the Totak area of Khuzdar late Friday evening. The assailants fired multiple rounds at the premises, prompting an immediate response from the leader’s personal bodyguards and deployed security personnel.
“During the exchange of fire, one of the attackers was injured in the guards’ retaliatory firing,” a security source told reporters, speaking on condition of anonymity. The injured suspect’s condition remained unknown, while the rest of the assailants managed to flee the scene under the cover of darkness following the brief shootout.
No casualties were reported among Mengal’s family members or security staff. The PPP leader, who also heads the Jhalawan Awami Panel, was present inside the residence at the time of the attack but remained unharmed.
Security forces swiftly cordoned off the area and launched a chase operation to track down the fleeing attackers. Officials confirmed that reinforcements have been dispatched to the locality, and a comprehensive search is underway to apprehend those responsible. Further investigation is in progress to determine the motive behind the assault and the identity of the perpetrators.
