WASHINGTON : Vice President JD Vance has confirmed that the United States has agreed to establish a direct, in-person communication channel with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in an effort to de-escalate regional tensions.
In an exclusive interview with the British website UnHerd, conducted aboard Air Force Two, Vance detailed the new arrangement, which marks a significant shift in U.S. policy toward Tehran. Under the agreement, Iranian and American military officials will meet face-to-face in Doha, Qatar.
“Iranian officials said that we will send a representative of the Revolutionary Guard Corps to Doha, who will sit down with an official from the U.S. Central Command and settle matters,” Vance told UnHerd’s Sohrab Ahmari. “That is how we will resolve many disputes.”
The vice president characterized the channel as a practical mechanism for reducing friction, though he did not specify the scope of disputes to be addressed.
Vance also revealed that the United Arab Emirates has similarly established new contacts with Iran, including unprecedented direct talks with the IRGC. “The UAE is holding talks with Iranian officials that have never happened before,” he said, noting that these engagements did not previously exist.
The announcement comes amid ongoing regional realignments and follows months of behind-the-scenes diplomacy in the Gulf.
