Indian and Afghan Media’s False Claim Unveiled

ISLAMABAD: The recent claims circulating on social media regarding the alleged killing of a “Senior Pakistani Army General Imdad Hussain Shah” in Bagh, Kashmir, are 100% false, fabricated, and malicious.

Lieutenant General Syed Imdad Hussain Shah is a serving senior officer of the Pakistan Army who currently holds the position of Commander XXX Corps in Gujranwala.

These reports are a part of a coordinated disinformation campaign aimed at creating instability, spreading fear, and sowing discord between the public and the Armed Forces of Pakistan.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been widely criticized for establishing an extensive and highly coordinated media and digital propaganda machinery since assuming power in 2014. This apparatus is frequently accused of shaping public discourse to align with government policies and the Hindutva ideology of the Sangh Parivar.

Analysts observe that this machinery operates through multiple channels:

  • Mainstream Media Alignment: Observers and veteran journalists describe sections of the Indian news media as “Godi media” (lapdog media), alleging that these outlets act as mouthpieces for the ruling party. This alignment is often incentivized through large government and party advertising budgets, which serve as a financial lever to influence editorial content.

  • Digital and Social Media Dominance: The BJP maintains a sophisticated information technology cell that utilizes WhatsApp and other social media platforms to disseminate campaign messaging, memes, and hashtags at scale. This distribution network is described as unparalleled, allowing the party to influence voters and set narratives within minutes.

  • Content and Narrative Control: Critics argue that this machinery actively promotes polarization, often by demonizing minorities or portraying political dissent as anti-national. Furthermore, journalists critical of the government face increased risks, including physical attacks, legal harassment, and online abuse from coordinated troll networks.

This environment has raised significant concerns regarding democratic backsliding, as the suppression of independent voices and the promotion of a singular, government-aligned narrative diminish the role of the media in ensuring accountability.
