Government tightens crackdown on multiple electricity meters used to obtain subsidies

ISLAMABAD: The consumers using more than one single-phase electricity meter to obtain subsidized power tariffs may soon face strict action as power distribution companies move to identify and penalize such practices.

In this regard, the electricity distribution companies, including Lahore Electric Supply Company, have decided to compile a complete record of consumers benefiting from protected category subsidies through multiple electricity meters.

The consumers found using additional meters to remain eligible for subsidized tariffs will be shifted from the protected category to the non-protected tariff system.

Furthermore, the power companies have also started publishing details of subsidy amounts directly on electricity bills in an effort to improve transparency. Furthermore, QR codes are now being printed on bills issued to consumers receiving subsidized electricity.

The collected information will be used to identify consumers who are allegedly misusing the subsidy system by installing more than one single-phase meter at the same residence or property. They added that strict monitoring is being introduced to reduce financial losses and improve fairness in the billing process.

The development comes amid increasing concerns over rising electricity sector losses and the growing burden of subsidies on the national economy.

However, consumer rights groups have urged the government to ensure that genuine low-income households are not affected by the crackdown. They have also called for a transparent verification process to avoid inconvenience for lawful consumers.

The latest measures indicate the government’s broader efforts to reform the power sector and strengthen accountability in the distribution of electricity subsidies across the country.
