He received a warm welcome at Istanbul Airport upon his arrival.
Pakistan has emerged as an important diplomatic player amid efforts to ease tensions between the United States and Iran. Islamabad maintains close ties with Tehran while also enjoy stronger relations with Washington under US President Donald Trump.
Analysts say Pakistan is uniquely positioned to facilitate dialogue between the two sides because it enjoys working relations with both capitals. They say the country could help encourage diplomacy and reduce the risk of further escalation.
The visit by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir comes as Pakistan continues its diplomatic outreach aimed at promoting dialogue and a political solution to the latest crisis between the United States and Iran.
Pakistan is seeking to preserve last month’s US-Iran peace framework, known as the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, to avoid actions that could further undermine regional stability.
