QUETTA: Under the special directives of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has successfully distributed financial relief cheques to the bereaved families of the miners who lost their lives in a tragic Balochistan coal mine accident .

According to the NDMA, relief cheques amounting to 2 million rupees per family were disbursed among the legal heirs of the 34 miners who died in the tragic incident that occurred in July 2026.

An active NDMA team traveled to the Shangla district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where they coordinated the distribution process with the local representative, Dr. Ebadullah.

During the distribution drive, the federal government extended its deepest solidarity and sympathies to the grieving families.

Authorities also reiterated a firm commitment to providing continuous support and assistance to the affected households during this difficult time.

Throwback on the Crisis of Deadly Accidents in Balochistan Mines

The tragic loss of lives in the mining sector highlights a recurring crisis deeply rooted in the structural vulnerabilities of the region’s mineral industry.

Deadly accidents in Balochistan mines have long been a matter of grave national concern, driven largely by hazardous working conditions, outdated extraction methods, and a persistent neglect of basic safety protocols.

Balochistan is immensely rich in mineral resources, particularly coal, which serves as a major energy driver and livelihood source for thousands of impoverished workers, many of whom migrate from remote areas like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Shangla district.

However, miners frequently face perilous environments underground, including toxic gas leaks, cave-ins, and structural collapses.

Despite repeated safety warnings and regulatory oversight calls from labor rights organizations, safety standard enforcement by mine owners often remains alarmingly lax.

While federal and provincial authorities routinely step in with financial compensation and relief checks following major disasters, systemic reform remains urgently needed.
