The severe fog conditions across several cities of Punjab have led to the temporary closure of miltiple sections of major motorways, significantly disrupting traffic movement and travel plans. The closures were announced by the spokesperson of the Central Region as part of precautionary measures aimed at ensuring the safety of road users amid extremely low visibility.
In such a case, the dense fog has reduced visibility to dangerous levels at various locations, prompting authorities to shut down key motorway routes for all types of traffic. Motorway M3 has been closed from Jaranwala to Rajana, Motorway M-4 from Faisalabad to Multan, Motorway M-5 from Multan to Rohri. The closures will remain in effect until weather conditions improve and visibility returns to safer levels.
Furthermore, the spokesperson of the Central Region emphasized that the primary objective of closing the motorways is the protection of public life and property.
“These decisions have been taken purely in the interest of public safety,” the spokesperson said, adding that fog-related accidents often result in serious injuries and loss of life due to reduced visibility and lane discipline violations.
In this case, the motorists have been strongly advised to exercise extreme caution while driving in foggy conditions. The spokesperson warned that lane violations during fog can lead to severe and sometimes fatal accidents.
So far, the road users were urged to strictly follow lane discipline, maintain safe distances, and reduce speed to avoid collisions. The motorway police have advised travelers to prefer daytime travel.
The safest travel window during foggy weather is between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm, when visibility conditions are relatively better. In addition, commuters planning long journeys have been encouraged to stay informed about the latest road and weather conditions.
The Motorway Police spokesperson advised citizens to contact the Motorway Police Helpline 130 before starting their journey or to check updates through the official social media accounts of the National Highways and Motorway Police.
