At UNSC, Iran says it needs 'credible guarantees' against attacks before Gulf can be stable: envoy

At a recent session of the United Nations Security Council, Iran focused on the need for firm international assurances to prevent any future military actions against its territory, linking such guarantees directly to long-term stability in the Persian Gulf region.

Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, stated that sustainable peace and security in the Gulf cannot be achieved without addressing what he described as ongoing threats against Iran. He underlined that Tehran requires credible commitments ensuring that no further aggression will occur, particularly referencing concerns about potential actions involving the United States and Israel.

“Lasting stability and security in the Persian Gulf and the wider region can only be achieved through a durable and permanent cessation of aggression against Iran,” Iravani said. He further stressed the importance of “credible guarantees of non-recurrence” and respect for Iran’s sovereignty and national interests.

The statements come amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, where security concerns continue to impact global energy markets. The Persian Gulf, a critical hub for oil production and transportation, plays a vital role in international economic stability. Any escalation in the region could have far-reaching consequences beyond its borders.

Iran has consistently maintained that its security concerns must be addressed through diplomatic channels and mutual respect among nations. Tehran argues that without binding assurances against future attacks, efforts to maintain regional peace will remain fragile and uncertain.

The issue is expected to remain a point of discussion in ongoing diplomatic engagements. The United Nations continues to serve as a platform for dialogue, with member states urging restraint and constructive engagement.
