DALLAS: The American Airlines passenger duct-taped to seat after an alleged mid-air outburst has spoken publicly about what happened on the flight, revealing that he had consumed two alcoholic drinks before the incident. However, Layne Lundeen, 67, says he has little to no memory of what happened afterward.
Lundeen was travelling in first class on American Airlines Flight 618 from Dallas to Newark on September 3. He said he had consumed two screwdrivers, a cocktail made with vodka and orange juice, before the situation escalated.
According to author and Messianic rabbi Jonathan Cahn, who was seated next to Lundeen, the two initially had a normal conversation that lasted about two hours. Their discussion eventually turned to religion, after which Cahn said Lundeen allegedly began shouting and using antisemitic and homophobic slurs.

As the situation became increasingly disruptive, fellow passengers intervened. Two men, Juan Mejia and Richard Olenick, reportedly helped restrain Lundeen using zip ties and duct tape.
Photos taken during the flight showed Lundeen restrained in his seat, with duct tape wrapped around his body and head. Mejia, a retired law enforcement officer, also alleged that Lundeen bit his hand during the struggle.
The incident forced the aircraft to divert to Baltimore rather than continue to Newark. Police were waiting when the plane landed.
Passenger Says He Does Not Remember the Incident
During a Maryland court appearance, Lundeen said he had almost no memory of what occurred after he had his drinks.
“I don’t remember any of what happened,” he told the court, according to reports. He also appeared surprised when told that he had allegedly assaulted a police officer.

Lundeen has been charged with second-degree assault and disorderly conduct. He was released on his own recognizance and ordered not to consume alcohol or take non-prescription drugs while the case proceeds.
Real Estate Company Fires Lundeen
The incident has also affected Lundeen’s professional life. Long Realty Company, where he worked as a real estate agent in Arizona, terminated his employment after photographs and videos from the flight circulated online.
The criminal case remains ongoing, and the allegations against Lundeen have not been proven in court.
