Gwadfar: Affected fishermen in Gwadar staged a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office, demanding action to safeguard their livelihoods. During the demonstration, a delegation of fishermen held talks with Additional Deputy Commissioner General Dr. Abdul Shakoor to present their grievances.
One of their key concerns was the recent notice issued by the Fisheries Department banning traditional fishing nets. The fishermen stated that around 80% of Gwadar’s local fishing community relies on this method for their seasonal income, and the decision has put their survival at risk.
They emphasized that for generations, local fishermen have sustained their households through this fishing practice.
Imposing restrictions based on the preferences of a few individuals or groups is deeply unfair to the larger fishing community.
They also alleged irregularities in the relief list for victims of recent sea storms, accusing the Fisheries Department and certain self-proclaimed representatives of manipulating the list. According to them, the list includes names of individuals who don’t even own boats, while genuine fishermen were excluded.
Another serious concern was the newly issued three-month fishing ban, which the fishermen fear will lead to starvation for many families.
They appealed to the authorities to urgently review these policies and ensure transparency and fairness in all decisions affecting the fishing sector.
The protesters urged the administration to act as true allies of the impoverished fishing community and take immediate steps to restore their means of livelihood.
It is worth mentioning that A ban has been imposed on fishing in Balochistan’s coastal waters.According to a notification from the district administration, fishermen will not be allowed to catch fish in Balochistan’s coastal areas for two months.
