KOHAT: Four people were killed and three others, including a passerby, were injured in a gunfight between two groups over an illegal gold mine in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kohat district, police and local sources said.
The incident took place in Darbo Kach area within the jurisdiction of Gambat police station, where the two groups allegedly opened fire at each other following a dispute over gold mining.
Panic spread in the area as people fled amid the gunfire. Three people, including a passerby, were caught in the firing and sustained injuries, according to local sources.
Police reached the site after receiving information about the incident and cordoned off the area. The bodies of those killed and the injured were shifted to a nearby medical facility, where the wounded were receiving treatment.
The incident triggered tension in the area. Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the clash and identify those involved in the shooting.
Local sources said the two groups had longstanding differences over gold mining at the site and that the firing was linked to the dispute. However, the exact motive and identities of the victims had not been officially confirmed.
Police said they had collected evidence from the scene and launched efforts to arrest those responsible. Security was also tightened in the area to prevent further violence.
