Fishing ban imposed in Balochistan waters for two months

QUETTA: A ban has been imposed on fishing in Balochistan’s coastal waters.According to a notification from the district administration, fishermen will not be allowed to catch fish in Balochistan’s coastal areas for two months.

The restriction has been enforced to support the breeding season of marine life.The ban will be effective from June 1 to July 31.

Meanwhile, the Fisheries Department of Balochistan in Gawadar has stated that strict implementation of the ban will be ensured.

The fishing industry in Balochistan plays a crucial role in the province’s economy, especially in coastal districts like Gwadar, Pasni, Ormara, and Jiwani.

The province has a coastline of over 770 kilometers along the Arabian Sea, providing rich marine resources.Thousands of locals depend on fishing for their livelihood.

Balochistan’s waters are home to a variety of seafood including shrimp, tuna, sardines, and mackerel, which are exported to international markets.

However, the industry faces challenges such as outdated equipment, lack of cold storage facilities, limited processing plants, and overfishing. Seasonal fishing bans, like the one from June to July, are implemented to allow fish species to reproduce and sustain marine biodiversity.
