ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s armed forces shot down eight drones after they entered the country’s airspace from Afghanistan on Wednesday morning, security sources said.
According to reports,eight drones launched from Afghanistan entered Pakistani airspace early Wednesday morning.
Pakistan’s armed forces, supported by an alert and active air-defence system, successfully detected and intercepted and brought down all eight drones, thwarting what security sources described as an attempt to target civilian areas.
Four drones were brought down in areas near the Torkham border, while the other four were shot down in mountainous areas along the border near Kohat, according to the sources.
The sources said the drones were believed to be targeting civilian areas and that the attempted attacks were thwarted by the Pakistan Army and Pakistan Air Force.
They described the drone incursions as another indication of what they called direct support for militants by Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities.
The development came a day after Pakistani forces reportedly destroyed several Afghan Taliban positions and posts in the Kurram sector in response to firing from across the border, according to security sources.
As per details, security forces have foiled an infiltration attempt by militants of the Fitna al Khawarij in sthe uppervision of the Afghan Taliban into the Kurram sector from Afghanistan, security sources said on Wednesday.
The attempted infiltration was reportedly launched from Afghan Taliban positions in Nangarhar and Paktia provinces, the sources said. Pakistani troops deployed along the border prevented the militants from entering Pakistan.
After the infiltration attempt was thwarted, Afghan Taliban forces opened fire on Pakistani border posts, according to the sources.
The firing involved heavy weapons, mortars and other arms, the sources said.
Pakistani forces responded with small and heavy weapons, including artillery. Several Afghan Taliban border posts, mortar positions and defensive positions were targeted, according to the sources.
The sources said the response forced Afghan Taliban personnel to abandon several positions.
They said Pakistani forces retained control of the border areas.
