ANKARA: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has said Saudi Arabia may have military requirements amid continuing attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement, adding that Türkiye is prepared to assess and address those needs under the recently signed trilateral defence agreement involving Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
Fidan made the remarks during an interview with Turkish broadcaster NTV, according to Reuters, as tensions continue to rise between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. The latest escalation has included missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi territory, including Riyadh and other cities.
Fidan described the trilateral defence arrangement as being at an important stage, saying strong political commitment had emerged to implement the agreement.
He said work was also underway on establishing the proposed secretariat and activating military headquarters linked to the pact.
The agreement is designed to strengthen defence cooperation among Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Reuters reported that the pact provides for an armed attack against one member to be treated as an attack against all three.
Fidan also said Türkiye was working diplomatically to help end the conflict in Yemen, adding that proposals aimed at stopping the fighting had been communicated to the relevant parties.
He further warned against involving Saudi Arabia in the wider US-Iran conflict and described the economic consequences of the broader Middle East crisis as increasingly difficult to sustain.
The latest statements come after a series of Houthi attacks on Saudi territory. Saudi authorities said a ballistic missile launched toward Riyadh was intercepted and destroyed by Saudi air defence forces on September 19.
Jordan subsequently condemned the attack and said attempts to target Saudi civilian areas and infrastructure represented a violation of Saudi sovereignty and international law.
The escalation has also affected Saudi energy infrastructure and regional shipping routes, increasing concerns over wider economic and security consequences.
Egypt and Jordan Express Solidarity With Saudi Arabia
Egypt has strongly condemned attacks inside Saudi Arabia, warning that continued strikes could further increase regional tensions. Cairo has reaffirmed its solidarity with Riyadh and stressed that the security of the two countries is closely connected.
Jordan has likewise condemned recent Houthi attacks and expressed support for Saudi Arabia’s efforts to protect its security, territory and population.
