ISLAMABAD: The latest Pakistan weather update brings a warning of heavy rain, flash floods and landslides as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast a new spell of monsoon rains across several parts of the country.
According to the PMD weather forecast, a new westerly wave is expected to affect the upper parts of Pakistan from August 31 and is likely to persist until September 5.
Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Jhelum, Chakwal, Lahore and Sialkot, along with other areas of upper Punjab, are expected to receive rain from August 29 to September 5.
The PMD has also forecast rain in several parts of central and southern Punjab from September 1 to 5.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, most districts, including Peshawar, Swat, Dir and Chitral, are likely to receive rain from August 29 to September 5.
Meanwhile, most parts of Sindh and Balochistan are expected to experience hot and humid weather during the period.
The Pakistan weather update also includes a forecast for Gilgit-Baltistan, where Diamer, Astore, Skardu and Hunza are expected to receive intermittent heavy rain from August 30 to September 6.
In Kashmir, intermittent heavy rainfall is expected in Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Bagh, Kotli, Bhimber and Mirpur until September 6.
The meteorological department has warned that continuous rainfall could cause urban flooding in major cities, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala and Mardan.
The PMD also cautioned that heavy rains could trigger rising water levels in local streams, flash floods and landslides in vulnerable mountainous areas.
In view of the potential risks, the department advised travellers and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel and remain updated on the latest weather conditions.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has directed the administrations and relevant departments in Mardan and Swabi to take precautionary measures and remain alert from August 31 to September 5 due to the risk of urban flooding.
Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to follow official weather alerts and take necessary precautions as the new monsoon spell develops.
