LAHORE: Significant progress has been reported regarding the Punjab local government elections.
The demarcation phase for constituencies across the province has concluded, and the comprehensive record has been formally submitted to the Election Commission of Pakistan.
The delimitation process began on April 20, during which more than 150 public objections were lodged and reviewed. In Lahore, a total of 433 union councils have now been established.
Breakdown figures across major administrative zones include 72 in Shalimar Town, 52 in Ravi Town, 25 in Wahga Town, 37 in Allama Iqbal Town, 69 in City Town, 32 in Raiwind, 77 in Model Town, 40 in Nishtar Town, and 29 in Saddar.
For comparison, the number of union councils in Lahore stood at 274 back in 2015, which has now increased significantly to 433.
Transmitting these demarcation records to the election commission marks a major milestone toward holding local body elections in the province.
History, Significance, and Grassroots Governance
Local government systems form the bedrock of grassroots democracy, serving as the primary tier for public service delivery, local community development, and civic administration.
Historically, the evolution of local governance in Pakistan has experienced numerous structural transformations, frequently fluctuating between military-led devolution plans and civilian administrative frameworks.
Robust municipal bodies are essential because they empower communities to address local issues—such as sanitation, water supply, and minor infrastructure—without relying heavily on provincial or federal bureaucracies.
Furthermore, effective decentralization bridges the gap between citizens and state machinery, fostering active community participation and transparent leadership at the neighborhood level.
Electoral administration, constituency management, and updates regarding election schedules can be explored directly through the Election Commission of Pakistan or the regional Local Government and Community Development Department portal.
