ISLAMABAD : At least 19 more people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents across Pakistan over the past 24 hours, pushing the nationwide death toll to 97 since June 26, as a fresh spell of torrential downpours continues to wreak havoc across the country.
The latest wave of heavy rains has triggered a devastating combination of roof collapses, electrocutions, drowning, and lightning strikes, with Punjab province bearing the brunt of the calamity.
In Lahore’s Garhi Shahu area, a roof collapse claimed the lives of a husband, wife, and their daughter, while another daughter sustained injuries. A similarly heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded in Gujrat, where three siblings — identified as 15-year-old Ali, 14-year-old Iman, and 13-year-old Falak Sher — lost their lives when the roof of their home caved in.
Elsewhere in Punjab, two people, including a seven-year-old child, died in a roof collapse in Kasur. In Hujra Shah Muqim, a woman was killed and four others injured in another roof collapse incident. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Hangu district, specifically in Darsamand, heavy rains caused a roof to collapse, resulting in the deaths of two children and injuries to three others, including two women.
Drowning incidents have also added to the grim toll. In Kasur’s Raja Jang area, two children — 10-year-old Saad and 11-year-old Ehsan — lost their lives after drowning in accumulated rainwater.
Electrocution has emerged as another major killer during the ongoing downpours. A man died from an electric shock in Bahawalnagar, while a seven-year-old child was electrocuted after coming into contact with an electric pole in Okara. In Daska, a father of five met the same fate due to an electric pole. In a separate incident in Sheikhupura, a live electric wire fell on a passenger bus, killing the bus conductor and injuring six passengers.
In Sindh province, a child was struck and killed by lightning in Umerkot, while one person drowned in floodwater in Tharparkar.
With the monsoon season intensifying, authorities have urged citizens to exercise extreme caution, avoid standing near electric poles or weakened structures, and stay indoors during heavy downpours. Rescue and relief operations remain underway across the affected regions as the death toll continues to mount
