WASHINGTON: The US Department of Defense has confirmed that approximately 100 American soldiers have been injured during the two-week-long conflict with Iran.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell disclosed on Wednesday that roughly 100 US service members have sustained various types of injuries since July 7. He further claimed that 96 percent of these injured soldiers have already returned to duty.
This latest revelation comes at a time when the US has also publicly released the identities of two soldiers who were killed in an Iranian attack on Friday. Prior to this, the Pentagon had only stated that 14 soldiers had been killed and 427 wounded since February 28.
However, officials have indicated that the number of American soldiers killed in Iran’s retaliatory attacks on US bases in northern Iraq and Jordan is likely to increase. According to US media reports, the military is currently examining unidentified body parts discovered at the site of the Iranian attack in Jordan, which suggests the death toll could rise further.
The US had already acknowledged the deaths of three US soldiers in Iranian attacks, with one soldier listed as missing. The US military confirmed yesterday that a soldier was killed in action in northern Iraq on July 18. Earlier on Saturday, two US soldiers were killed and one went missing in an Iranian missile attack on Jordan, while four additional US soldiers were wounded in that same incident.
