PESHAWAR: Two Pakistani policemen were killed in a militant attack on a police patrol in Mohmand district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police said on Friday.
The attack took place overnight in the Yakka Ghund tehsil of Mohmand district, where suspected militants opened fire on a police patrol vehicle, according to a district police spokesperson.
The victims were identified as Station House Officer Zaitullah and Elite Force Constable Noor Zeb.
“During last night’s attack by Fitna al-Khawarij (TTP) terrorists, both officers fought bravely and embraced martyrdom,” the spokesperson said.
Senior police officials attended the funeral prayers for the slain officers, who were later buried with full state honors.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. However, Pakistani authorities attributed it to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which Islamabad refers to as “Fitna al-Khawarij.”
Pakistan has repeatedly accused Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government of providing safe haven to TTP militants who launch attacks across the border. The Afghan Taliban deny the allegations and have urged Islamabad to address its security challenges internally.
Relations between the two neighbors have deteriorated in recent months. Pakistan has carried out airstrikes inside Afghanistan targeting what it says were militant hideouts, prompting cross-border clashes and diplomatic tensions.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which borders Afghanistan, has witnessed a sharp increase in militant violence over the past two years. The TTP has frequently targeted security forces, police personnel and government officials in the province.
