Pakistan Strengthening Defence While Pursuing Peace: PM

KARACHI: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Saturday that Pakistan remains committed to peace, dialogue and diplomacy while strengthening its defence capabilities to address an increasingly complex regional and global security environment.

Addressing the passing-out parade at the Pakistan Naval Academy (PNS Rahbar) in Karachi, the prime minister congratulated newly commissioned naval officers and described their graduation as a milestone in their service to the nation.

He said Pakistan continues to play the role of a responsible and peace-loving member of the international community. He added that peace and cooperation have become more important than ever amid evolving global challenges.

Sharif praised the Pakistan Naval Academy for producing highly trained officers who will contribute to the country’s defence and maritime security.

The prime minister said the Pakistan Navy remains a vital pillar of national defence and an important force for regional peace and stability. He said Pakistan has consistently preferred dialogue and diplomatic engagement to resolve disputes and promote regional stability.

He said the country had made sustained diplomatic efforts to encourage peace and reduce tensions in the region. At the same time, he said Pakistan would continue to safeguard its national interests and security.

Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination. He said Islamabad would continue to advocate for their legitimate rights through peaceful and diplomatic means.

The prime minister warned that Pakistan faces an increasingly complex security environment shaped by regional instability and rapidly changing global dynamics. He said the country is modernising its defence capabilities to meet emerging threats.

He highlighted the strategic importance of the Pakistan Navy in protecting the country’s maritime frontiers, sea lanes and energy supply routes. He said modern technology, professional expertise and strong institutions are essential to address future security challenges.

Sharif said the Pakistan Navy is integrating advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence and unmanned systems, to strengthen its operational readiness and prepare for future maritime challenges.

Addressing the graduating officers, he urged them to uphold discipline, professionalism and dedication throughout their careers. He said true leadership emerges during difficult times, not in calm conditions.

“Calm seas do not test a sailor, and favourable winds do not reveal a captain’s true abilities,” he said. “Character, courage and a sense of duty define leadership during adversity.”

The prime minister told the new officers that serving Pakistan is the nation’s highest honour and greatest responsibility. He urged them to remain steadfast in their commitment to protecting the country’s sovereignty and security under all circumstances.
