ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has allowed 724 trucks carrying humanitarian aid to cross into Afghanistan through the Torkham border crossing, the United Nations and Pakistani officials said on Friday.
Pakistan has kept its border crossings with Afghanistan closed to trade since October 2025 after a series of deadly clashes and rising security tensions.
The closure also disrupted the movement of Afghan transit cargo through Pakistan’s Karachi port.
Repeated clashes and worsening economic conditions have forced tens of thousands of Afghans to leave their homes. The United Nations and other international agencies have been providing food and other essential assistance to displaced families.
Mohamed Yahya, the UN resident and humanitarian coordinator in Pakistan, said 724 trucks carrying humanitarian supplies had crossed into Afghanistan through Torkham.
He said the aid had reached families most in need.
“Deeply grateful to the Government of Pakistan and all those who made it possible to keep the humanitarian lifeline open,” Yahya said in a post on X.
Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar welcomed the effort. He said Pakistan was glad to facilitate the UN’s humanitarian assistance and help people in need in Afghanistan.
Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have deteriorated amid a surge in militant attacks inside Pakistan, particularly since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.
Islamabad has repeatedly accused Kabul of allowing the Pakistani Taliban and other militant groups to operate from Afghan territory. Kabul has denied the allegations.

The continued attacks have contributed to repeated and deadly clashes along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in recent months.
