BEIJING: China welcomed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran and called on all parties to fully respect their commitments under the agreement.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the agreement should help reduce tensions and improve stability in global shipping routes.
Officials said all parties must adhere to their obligations to ensure lasting regional stability. They also said the concerns of the international community should be taken into account, particularly on maritime security and energy transport.
The ministry highlighted the importance of the Strait of Hormuz. It described the waterway as a critical corridor for global oil and energy shipments.
Beijing said shipping and trade routes in the region must be managed carefully to avoid further disruptions to global markets.
The statement comes amid heightened international attention on the deal, which is aimed at de-escalating regional tensions.
Earlier reports said US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed the memorandum electronically. The agreement is intended to formally end hostilities between the United States, Israel and Iran.
The deal is also expected to support the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz after months of disruption linked to regional tensions.
Reports said the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” was facilitated through mediation efforts led by Pakistan.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the agreement took effect immediately after endorsement by both sides.
