Trump Sets Conditions for Iran to Get $300B Back

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said Iran’s access to an estimated $300 billion in frozen assets will depend on its future conduct. He said sanctions relief and the release of financial resources could follow if Tehran adopts a constructive approach.

Speaking in a statement, Trump said the 60-day period set for reaching a final agreement with Iran was not a strict or final deadline. He added that U.S. forces would remain in the Gulf region for the time being.

Trump said the United States continues to hold major Iranian financial assets under restrictions. He said Washington could release those funds at an appropriate time.

“If Iran honors its commitments and demonstrates a positive attitude, it could gain access to the $300 billion fund,” Trump said.

He added that Iran has agreed not to develop or acquire nuclear weapons. He said talks on nuclear stockpiles and other technical issues are expected to begin soon.

Trump also claimed that Israeli leaders have expressed satisfaction with the proposed agreement.

The U.S. president praised Pakistan and Qatar for their diplomatic efforts. He said both countries played an important role in helping advance negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
